Hot Mix Asphalt

  • Long Lasting and Extremely Durable
  • Adds Curb Appeal and Increases Home’s Value
  • Is Engineered to Withstand Freezing and Thawing

Description

Asphalt is a versatile paving material that is an engineered mixture of aggregate with liquid asphalt cement, a petroleum product. Excavation and grading are performed for best possible drainage. Asphalt is environmentally friendly as it is 100% recyclable. Varying sizes of aggregates are heated then mixed in exact proportions with asphalt cement that has been liquefied at about 300 degrees F.

Durability

Hot mix asphalt is strong, durable, and unlike other more rigid materials such as concrete, asphalt is designed to flex and “give” with slight settlements or frost heave. Using hot mix asphalt as your driveway material is the most cost‐effective option you can choose and will provide years of lasting service with minimal maintenance.

Resurfacing

Resurfacing is the process of installing a new layer of asphalt, generally 1ó to 2 inches over the existing pavement. Resurfacing a driveway or lot is ideal when the surface has become heavily oxidized, but the base is still stable. A key consideration when resurfacing is drainage. As a general rule, the surface should have a minimum of 1% slope for water to flow properly, roughly 1" of fall for every 10 feet. By milling the edges of the existing asphalt down, the new material can be installed at the same level, thereby preventing trip hazards and also preventing water from becoming trapped there.

Asphalt Paving ‐ 19mm Binder Course

19mm Binder Course is applied in one layer, is as strong as regular base and has a sufficient amount of liquid asphalt to roll into a very durable surface. The difference is that the texture is coarser than 9.5mm Wearing Course. This one‐layer course can be a considerable cost savings to the customer because labor costs for installation are lower.

Asphalt Paving ‐ 25mm Base Course and 9.5mm Wearing Course

A full‐depth two layer course of asphalt provides a better balance of strength, flexibility and durability than any other material. The first layer of 25mm Base Course is installed and compacted; after this layer cools, a second layer of 9.5mm Wearing Course is installed, rolled and compacted into place. This application results in a smoother finish, and is desirable for residential customers.

Just a Note...

Foot traffic is allowed immediately after completion, however, keep all traffic and parked vehicles off of your new asphalt for at least 5‐7 days, and longer in hot weather ‐ during the first year or more your driveway is still curing. Remember, asphalt is a flexible material and on hot days is particularly vulnerable to depressions, scuffing and tire marks. Take the following precautions during that time to keep your driveway looking great:

  1. Always avoid oil and gas spills on your asphalt surface‐seal coated or not. Clean up any spills with soap and water. If you have a car dripping oil, place a piece of cardboard or plywood to protect the driveway until the car can be repaired.
  2. Try not to park in the same place every day. Especially in the summer, when parking vehicles or trailers for extended periods of time, place a piece of wood under the tires & tongue; a piece of metal or wood under motorcycle stands; and if you must use a car ramp or jack stand, place plywood underneath the ramp or jack to help distribute the weight and prevent dents.
  3. To prevent tire marks & scuffing of the surface make sure the car is in motion when turning. DO NOT TURN YOUR STEERING WHEEL BACK AND FORTH IF YOUR CAR ISN’T MOVING! Essentially, turning around in tight places, pulling in too quickly and “peeling” out can scar your new driveway.
